Observation of the overall pile foundations damage pattern during the Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake indicate distinct features depending on whether the local response is dominated by the ground shoking or the ground failure. Although the database speclfic to the behavior of friction piles is limited, there is a reasonable indication of favorable behavior during the earthquake. Attempt is made to identify possible reasons for the favorable behavior of friction piles, with a view to delineate future research directions. Possible implicotions to the future design practice in friction pile foundation are also discussed.
